The Tommy Corral
Memorial Foundation was established in December of 2014 by the family of Tommy
Corral, a 19 year old who lost his battle with depression to suicide. Since the Foundation was established they
have been working in the community to increase education on the factors that lead to suicide and create resources
to help those struggling with mental illness and suicide thoughts.
Teen Group Hope support groups have been
established, the first of their kind in our community. Teen Groups have been established in Harlem School District
and two community groups open to all teens, one held at Riverside Community Church in Machesney Park and the other at Crowne Pointe House in Belvidere. These groups provide an opportunity for teens
struggling with bullying, depression and/or other emotional and mental struggles to speak
openly, to be heard, and to connect with others who struggle in the same ways
as a support for one another.
The
Foundation also provides funds and opportunities for many community
members to get certified in Mental Health First Aid in order to become prepared
and equipped to handle a mental health crisis.
Xavier Whitford, Tommy’s mother, is a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor for both Adults and Public Safety. Xavier has helped train school staff as well as students on the
nature of depression and the warning signs of suicide and works tirelessly to educate
and provide support to those who need it. In March of 2016, Xavier and her daughter, Makaya, traveled to Washington, DC to meet with members of Congress to plead with them to mandate student training in schools for suicide prevention and awareness. They also feel strongly and advocate for parent training for suicide prevention and awareness.
Each Breath of Faith Ministries is a part of the Foundation and speaks to churches, youth groups, and other faith based groups on suicide prevention. Faith communities are a natural setting for suicide prevention and Xavier's own faith and journey though the loss of her son provides an impactful message on the subject. Spiritual beliefs and practices can help people experience greater hope and meaning in their lives and often times is the lifeline after traumatic experiences. Faith communities can also provide opportunities for developing positive relationships and can be an important source of support for those who experience the factors that lead to suicide or suicide loss.

The purpose of the Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation is to expand understanding, empathy and provide supportive services in our community for depression and suicide. To achieve these goals, the Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation pledges to support charitable organizations that support families of suicide and individuals struggling with mental illness, however possible. The Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation will also support efforts to improve education, concerning these serious topics in our schools and throughout our community. ReplyDeleteI want to thank all those who participated in the fundraising events at Vintage@501 and the Memorial Bike Run. We raised over $1,000 with those two events alone. I am currently working on setting up meetings with local businesses and an accountant to try and get everything set in place and partnerships to move forward with our mission.
ReplyDeleteThe newest development with the Tommy Corral Foundation is a partnership with Group Hope. We are collaborating on getting some support groups set up for teens and young adults locally. This is an exciting new venture and something I believe God has planned becasue though several connections this has been forming into reality. Some of the funds from the Tommy Corral Foundation will be used to help secure materials, meeting space, and supplies. Please keep this your prayers!

The mission of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is to serve as a catalyst for giving, in order to attract, preserve, and grow our endowment for the current and future needs of our community. The Community Foundation serves as a promoter and advisor on charitable giving for the Tommy Corral Memorial Fund and will help with the administration requirements of the fund as well. We are excited for this new partnership and look forward to building the fund and creating a legacy that will honor Tommy's life and continue to support the community for years to come.

ReplyDeleteI am very excited to announce that we have two new teen support groups starting in our community to help teens struggling with depression and other mental illnesses. There will be a test pilot after school group at Harlem Middle School starting April 28th. There will also be a teen "Group Hope" meeting starting on Tuesday evenings 5:30-7pm at the Rockford Public Library East Branch beginning April 28th. It is very encouraging to have these new resources available to our local teens. The groups provide hope and a chance to be heard and understood while gaining support and encouragement from others who are struggling in similar ways. These initiatives are just part of what we hope to accomplish with The Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation!
ReplyDeleteOur Teen Group Hope meeting has been going well and the word is getting out to local area teens. We hope as this group grows and facilitators of the group increase we can start a second group on a different day and time. We have also had conversations with different area schools in hopes to educate their teachers and staff to create school support groups similar to the one we did at HMS. Progress is happening and we are excited to be part of creating the first of these types of groups in our community.
ReplyDeleteThe Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation is sponsoring four individuals to attend the Mental Health First Aid Training offered locally. This training was established to arm the public with skills to help individuals who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The clinical and qualitative evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps the public better identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness, thus improving outcomes for individuals experiencing these illnesses.
