Suicide Education

There is a perception amongst the general public that suicide isn't something that touches the broad community.  In reality it can be an issue for individuals from any walk of life.  Suicide is heavily linked to depression.  The prime factor is hoplessness.  Though it's not actually a feeling, hopelessness is when your experience and belief is that things will never get better.

Statistics:
- In 2014, there were 42,773 deaths by suicide in the United States. (save.org)
- Over 800,000 people die by suicide worldwide every year.  (WHO)
- There is one death by suicide in the US every 12.3 minutes. (CDC)
- There is one death by suicide in the WORLD every 40 seconds. (WHO)
- Sucide rates in the U.S. are highest in the Springtime. (save.org)
- 15% who are clinically depressed die by suicide (save.org)
- The strongest risk factor for suicide is depression.
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 15-24. (CDC)
- There are four mail suicides for every female suicide (CDC)
- 90% of all people who died by suicide were suffering from a mental illness at the time (AFSP)

If you are suicidal please call the help line:  1-800-273-8255 or text 741741 to talk to someone.  Remember when someone is suicidal, sometimes they can only think about the right now.  Next week and even tomorrow is too far into the future for them to think about.  The only feelings and awareness is to what is happening now.
